Twenty-three students from all over the country arrive at the retreat center in Northern California on a Friday afternoon.
They know they are there to talk honestly about race. The tension in the air is palpable. It is one thing to tell
the truth to a camera while sitting in a room by yourself, but completely another to talk to a room full of strangers,
people apparently totally different from yourself and possibly hostile toward your views. The entire group gathers
in one room to introduce themselves and immediately the discussion is highly charged. Everyone takes a stand.
Everyone has a position to defend. |
 |
After the introductory discussion, the students have some free time to get to
know each other better. They make some initial efforts to understand where the others are coming from,
but things are rocky. Late in the evening they break down into same-race groups called caucuses.
The white students seem to have the most to get off their chests. |
